What Is ISO 27001?
ISO/IEC 27001:2022 is the international standard for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS). It defines how organizations should manage information assets (data, systems, people) to prevent loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Unlike HIPAA (which is healthcare-specific) or PCI-DSS (which is payment-card-specific), ISO 27001 is applicable to any organization in any industry that needs to prove it has a systematic approach to information security.
Why ISO 27001 Matters
- Regulatory alignment: Many government contracts, international partnerships, and compliance programs reference ISO 27001.
- Customer trust: Customers and partners increasingly ask, "Are you ISO 27001 compliant?" Certification demonstrates commitment.
- Risk reduction: The standard forces you to identify, assess, and mitigate security risks systematically.
- Business continuity: ISO 27001 includes controls for disaster recovery, backup, and incident response.
- Competitive advantage: For SMBs selling to enterprises, ISO 27001 certification can unlock new contracts.
Do You Need Certification?
Not always. ISO 27001 has two components:
- Gap assessment: Step 1 of the ISO 27001 certification path. Sold separately so you can decide whether to proceed.
- Certification: Third-party audit to verify your ISMS meets ISO 27001 (formal certification).
Most SMBs start with implementation. Certification comes later if customers require it (typically enterprise-focused organizations).
Typical ISO 27001 Implementation
An ISMS typically includes:
- Governance: Information Security Committee, policy framework, roles & responsibilities.
- Risk Management: Asset inventory, threat assessment, risk scoring, mitigation strategies.
- Controls: Technical (encryption, access controls, network security), Administrative (policies, training, audits), Physical (data center security, visitor access).
- Monitoring: Security incident log, audit trails, continuous improvement cycle.
CLAS by Fred's Approach
We offer two options:
Option 1: Gap Analysis
You have partial controls in place. We audit your current state against ISO 27001, identify gaps, and provide a roadmap.
Deliverable: 15–20 page gap analysis report with prioritized remediation plan.
Timeline & Cost: 3–4 weeks, from $4,500 standalone
Option 2: Full Implementation
If you're starting from scratch, the gap assessment is the first step. We agree the next step with you once the gaps are known.
Deliverable: Governance framework, policies, asset inventory, risk register, control checklist, training plan.
Timeline & Cost: 8–12 weeks, from $8,500
What's Included in Implementation
Scope Definition
Define what information systems, data, and locations fall under ISMS scope.
Asset Inventory
Document all IT assets (hardware, software, cloud services, people).
Risk Assessment
Identify threats, estimate impact and likelihood, determine risk levels.
Governance Framework
Create information security policy, committee structure, and oversight processes.
Controls Selection
Choose ISO 27001 controls that address identified risks.
Implementation Roadmap
Prioritize and sequence control deployment over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ISO 27001 required by law?
No. It's a voluntary standard. However, if you work with government, large enterprises, or regulated industries (finance, healthcare, energy), clients often require ISO 27001 certification or compliance as a contract condition.
How long does implementation take?
Depends on your starting point. Gap analysis: 3–4 weeks. Full implementation from scratch: 8–12 weeks. Ongoing maintenance: quarterly check-ins and annual audits.
Do all 93 controls apply to my organization?
No. ISO 27001:2022 includes 93 Annex A controls grouped into 4 themes (organizational, people, physical, technological). You select controls relevant to your risk profile. A 10-person consulting firm won't implement the same controls as a healthcare practice or financial institution.
Can we implement ISO 27001 without certification?
Yes. Many organizations implement ISMS without pursuing formal certification. Implementation is faster and cheaper. Certification (via a third-party auditor) is optional and typically pursued 12+ months after implementation.
Does ISO 27001 replace HIPAA or PCI?
No. ISO 27001 is a framework; HIPAA and PCI are specific regulations. We design your ISMS to meet all applicable requirements at once.
